And the Two Become One

by Mychael Black, Shayne Carmichael Chapter Eight

Cian leaned up against the door and closed his eyes. The coolness of the wood did nothing to alleviate the pain within him. For two days, he avoided Mael, giving them both the space and time they needed. Without Mael's presence, even the tower felt strange, as if something vital had been missing.

Cian knew lovers went through this; he'd gone through it so many ages ago with Richard. Yet with Mael, it hurt more than Cian thought possible. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he opened the door to Mael's office slowly, unsure of what sort of reception he would receive from the prince. It was he, after all, who had walked away.

Seated at his desk, Mael worked, not even bothering to look up. Only the slightest pause in his writing told Cian that Mael knew he was even there. Cian closed the door and found himself unable to move, fearful above all else that Mael would want nothing to do with him. "I'm sorry."

"For what?" Mael asked quietly without glancing up.

"For everything." Cian sat down finally, resting his forearms on his knees. "Mael, please. Just look at me."

"There is no reason to apologize to me, Cian." Mael set the pen down and looked up. "You believe as you do and there's no reason for you to change that. The same holds true for me."

"And I understand how you feel, Cian. I'm not angry because you feel the way you do. I don't think I'm angry at all." Smiling faintly, Mael reached out, fingers twining in Cian's hair.

Cian sighed with Mael's touch. "I cannot change the way I am, any more than you can change yourself. It is part of what I am to fight for such things. It is why I am here, before you.

I would do anything for you and I'm trying to understand your side of things. I can see love like others can see the world around them. I can feel it like others can feel the wind and the rain." He lifted his hand and slipped his fingers between Mael's, grasping his lover's hand tightly.

"And love can die," Mael argued. "No matter the best intentions of the holders. I've known Cornelius almost all of my life. Can a leopard change its spots? I suppose I am to let things go and find out?"

"Even the strongest steel can be tempered with the right fire. We are proof enough of that."

Mael withdrew his hand, his expression hardening. "You are still trying to convince me that I made the wrong decision.
